Marmy Fluffy Butt, Elongated

Those attentive readers who are familiars of Marmy Fluffy Butt will gasp at the virtuosity she allowed the camera to witness, and then, without the usual *ack*::*ack* contrarian fanfare, capture.

Since her feline version of IBS has been brought under control, she's in love bug stage, and can often be found attached to my left hip.  She challenges Buddy the Outrageously Large Maine Coon for Manor leadership about every other day, and has inflicted several warning slashes upon little Dobby's face when he moved in for an innocent traditional DNA check.

She's full of herself, in other words.

We like this version of a long, slinky Marmy Fluffy Butt -- she is not hiding out with abdominal pain, she is, in fact, stretching to new lengths, she winks at me and cracks the worst kind of jokes, then *ack*::*ack*s to her heart's content!

Should Marmy enthrall you, these two old posts describe how she got her and her reign since:
Wednesday's CatCam -- Full of Woe and Wednesday Morning Blahs.

Please allow me to share my etymological discovery of the day!  One cannot observe the magnificence that is Marmy without eventually entertaining the term "hoity-toity."  Most often, her attitudinal fluffiness causes a mental stutter, leaving you psychically mumbling, "hoity, hoity, hoiteeee!"  Ah, but... anyway! The term "hoity-toity" actually made snopes.com!

"Hoity-toity" begs for a hoity-toity origin.  And so was born an etymology with an accent, from an older world with smaller cobbled streets, and where the habit of looking down on people whilst sipping on a thick, caramelly espresso from the comfy vantage point of a limestone or bluestone or concrete tile perch:  "The term "hoity-toity" comes from the French words haut toit, meaning 'high roof.'"

Berlitz called it this way:  "The expression 'hoity-toity,' for ; pretentious,;  comes from the French haut toit — high roof — from which the pretentious looked down on the literally 'lower' classes."

In swoops snope to do what snope does:

Origins:   In common English speech, "hoity-toity" is an adjective used with disdain to refer to the pretentious, those who put on a show of pretending to possess refinement and sophistication (similar to "highfalutin"). So, some people naturally assume that such an unusual expression, referring to the cultured, must itself have a cultured origin — in this case a French-language reference to the (literal) upper class, people who looked down upon others from atop their high roofs (i.e., haut toit).
"Hoity-toity" has nothing to do with French (or the French), however. The expression comes from our penchant for creating rhyming phrases such as "loosey-goosey" or "helter-skelter," and in this case its base is "hoit," an obsolete 16th century verb whose meaning is "to play the fool" or "to indulge in riotous and noisy mirth." ("Hoity-toity" was more commonly used to describe those who engaged in thoughtlessly silly or frivolous behavior before it became more of a synonym for "pretentious.") Attempts to find the word "haughty" to be an ancestor of "hoity-toity" are equally specious.

I thought of mourning the loss of a lovely etymology.

Then, thinking of the Queen who prompted the whole half-arsed search, I realized how much closer she is to silliness -- *ack*::*ack* and a wink, followed by a seductive, round-bellied flop and presentation of one white-fuzzed, pink-skinned abdomen in need of rubbing -- than to serious haughtiness.

If It's Sunday, It's Bad Videos!

I'm going out on a limb and declaring someone's search for "baclofen porn" to be the weirdest search of this blog to date.  Baclofen is a drug for spasticity.  Baclofen porn?  I cannot even imagine what that means, but I'd love to know.  So... whomever you are, s'plain yourself!

Late last night, I decided to reintroduce myself to some of the minor technology that has piled up in our well-appointed apartments here in the West Wing of Marlinspike Hall.  Won't bore you with long stories about Best Buy, UPS, Amazon... but will divulge that they did not come off as brilliant marketers over the holidays.

I had trouble sleeping so I loaded and tweaked and played with a new mp3 player that will hold more than the 6 songs my last one managed.  I did the tweaking and playing part of that in the soft swinging hammock of the velvety dark -- and was repeatedly attacked by one Buddy, the outrageously large kitten, our Maine Coon.  He's undergoing yet another growth spurt and that means, too, a certain recidivism in his behaviors, mostly chewing -- wires, anything plastic, doors, canes, wheelchair wheels.  I got him settled down, eventually, by doing what he cannot resist -- toy with his elastic ears.  Pulling them, scratching them, praising their magnificence.  I set the player to a 60-minute sleep mode, blew all the tension out of my body via my mouth, and let my mind go with the music.

The little faker.  Five minutes into my relaxation, KABOOM.  Imagine Buddy landing on your chest, claws clawing, vocalizing like a feline maniac, going after those noisy little wires, yanking the earbuds from your aural cavity with fierce violence.

He's fascinated with music.  Or noise.  Fred bought an old spinet piano several weeks ago, and Buddy lurks as Fred pecks at the newly tuned keys, looking over his shoulder, trying to find a way inside (what is a piano, after all, but a big box?).  He walks on the keys, jumping straight in the air sometimes at the sound he himself produced.

Yeah, so another piece of electronics that mocks me is the video camera,  I loved my little Flip thingy, but I also dropped it into a sink full of hot soapy water.  The new one, refurbished, is a mainstream model, meaning:  it's not for me!  I can't get my hands to find one ergonomic boon in the design of the thing.

So, of course, we decide we're gonna make a movie of Buddy and the Piano.  I dug through piles of buzzing, whirring electronic gadgets, found the camcorder, and did a test shot of the Maine Coon flexing his paws and claws in preparation for a Beethoven piece he's been practicing.

Then, of course, as we proceeded in solemn cortège to the funky spinet piano (for which Fred has yet to purchase a bench), and Fred began a rousing version of Oh My Darling Clementine while the cat lolled on the cat tree just behind Fred's right shoulder.  Buddy mostly stared (glumly, very glumly) at me and the stupid camera.

The stupid camera's battery died.

Okay, fine.  So this morning, after the Night of MP3 Battles, I figured I would get the now properly charged camera out for some practice.  It requires too much of my hands but practice can occasionally improve performance, I hear.

But I only produced nonsense.  So, of course, I am posting it, with these caveats:
1.  I know my house is a mess, so hush;
2.  No, I do not abuse Miss Marmy Fluffybutt, I don't care what she tells the SPCA;
3.  I know my filming skills suck, thankyouverymuch (see aphorism about "practice" above)
4.  Fred was worshiping with the Militant Lesbian Existential Feminists;
5.  Yes, I know my feet and hands don't "look right." I have CRPS, you ninny;
6.  I'm really sorry for posting junk... but I am bored and the only other things to do right now are dishes, laundry, and vacuuming;
7.  Ignore the raspy voiced narrator, she is an idiot.

Oh, and I promise not to encourage Buddy in his interest in the microwave.

okay, so this video is even worse than i imagined... also, i forgot that youtube won't accept (from me, at present) vids longer than 10 minutes.  so you missed the update of my feet.  have no fear, we'll capture some beauty shots of those things at the end of my legs.

i need Marmy

so i think i may lose my right leg.  good morning!

it's not imminent, nor eminent.  as a leg, it achieved some fame in my teens and twenties, primarily on the tennis court.  and while i have several meltdowns a day and repeatedly schedule its amputation out in the Paisley Sheep pen (lots of clean straw and that fresh, cold air to make that outdoorsy party atmosphere -- we can pile pumpkins around and serve hot chocolate), i'm trying to get over some bronchitis.  you gotta prioritize.

i keep rediscovering that people are pretty nice, that most everyone is doing their damnedest.  some could use a little *focus* but everyone is trying.

ms. marmy fluffy butt (a cat) is, however, breaking my heart.  it's been months now that she'll have nothing to do with me.  i can take such treatment from human family, but my marmy dear?  i miss her.

[i'm sure you want to refresh yourself on my few and far between cat posts (yawn!) but this one does a good job of summarizing the topic, though it lacks details on our beloved Monaghan and Ms. Pruddy Prudence. I stole the video of Marmy from it, in fact, as she is notoriously hard to capture on film: Wednesday Morning Blahs. ]

it started out understandably enough:  i was dubbed the human who was to "goop" her eyes because she had a nasty ocular infection.  i would hate me, too, but i would get over it, i think.

then it got complicated.  somehow, territorial rivalry set in, with Dobby the Runt and Buddy the Freakishly Large Kitten, boys both, claiming me in the name of... well, Creature Comforts.  i am the source of greenies and belly rubs, grooming with kisses on the nose, and gourmet-grade bonito flakes.

Marmy Fluffy Butt has not reverted to the feral gal we first knew her to be, but she is more and more hiding
-- i look behind furniture for her, often missing her petite self staring sullenly my way just a few feet off.

the boys won't let her on the bed.  the boys won't let her eat until they're done.  sometimes -- lately -- she and i lock eyes, then do a simultaneous eye roll.

i've taken to rolling the wheelchair just to the edge of the Permissible Zone and just talking to her.  world events, politics, the local hullabaloo over proposed speed humps.  i am pretty sure she and i are on the same side on the speed hump thing.  we have a prototype set up -- thank you, Tante Louise! -- and already, three Cistercian monks have taken ungainly headers over the handlebars of their pre-WWII bikes.

sometimes Marmy gifts me with a squint of affection that will carry me through the day on a cloud of alrightness.  i make sure she has a clean warm blanket on the best chair in our living quarters here in the manor -- i change it twice a week under her watchful eyes, her infection-free eyes.

Dobby is her son.  Buddy spent his entire babyhood hiding from her.  we must return to filial fealty, we must return to respect for her speedy, speedy claws.

and we must return to Marmy glommed to my side, beautiful, warm, well-groomed, and opinionated.

i need Marmy.  happy thanksgiving, my dear.

Directed Dreaming: Elephant Teeth and Roller-Coasters

Enchanted Kingdom, Sta. Rosa, Philippines, photo by  pattyequalsawesome (Patty Lagera)

Without meaning to, this blog has become a chart of sorts, plotting the course of the infection in my bones, and the always amusing neurological affliction that is CRPS.  As I approach a new surgery date for the removal of my left shoulder prosthesis and a good old-fashioned washout of the joint, the primacy of the physical seems to be reasserting itself.

No, that's not true.  More the primacy of misery, a matter of pure choice.

You'll be forgiven if you added: "Don't forget the insanity and considerable free-floating anxiety that is your baseline, dear, dear prof-de-rien!"

I passed an uncomfortable night, marked by fits of chills followed by hours of very painful spasms, mostly in my right leg, but also with some jerkifying input from the left side.  I still have the chills and am happy to own so many soft and organic layering pieces, happy that hoodies are the rage, as my hoods are up, up, up.  My temp is only 100.6, not abnormally high for me, but I cannot stop shaking.

So distraction is the name of today's game.  It worked now and then during the night, taking me through several hundred pages of a trilogy I'm reading -- all the while continuing my obsession with peach yogurt and kettle corn.  Buddy the freakishly large kitten appreciates my food fixations (see the video from a few days ago featuring buddy and the yogurt carton).  Seeing him with the container stuck on his head has become a common sight but it still cracks me up...

In good news (there is always something from the Order of Good going on, if I will just look):  I continue to sleep way more than usual.  I also continue to have fascinating dreams -- thanks, I believe, to a doubling of one of my medications.  Drug-induced or just happenstance, I enjoy dreaming, so long as the oneiric life is not one of terror.  There are some interesting recurring characters my mind has developed, including one anorexic elephant who speaks with a lisp and sends me on scavenger hunts for obscure culinary items.

Okay, so by "recurring," I mean "twice."

My charming pachyderm doesn't have a name that I can recall, but he does have a cyst or something in his mouth, along with a huge, single tooth smack dab in the middle of its lower mouth (jaw?).  Clearly, I am challenged in the field of elephant anatomy but a quick read tells me that my dream very much misrepresents their dentition. Most teeth of our acquaintance originate from the top or the bottom of the mouth, but these creatures have molars that emerge from back to front.  Their tusks are considered incisors and they are without what we call "canines."

"Most teeth of our acquaintance..." -- another landmark moment in my writing history.

I was doing fine with my anorexic and thoughtful (though rather demanding) elephant until I started looking up teeth among the order Proboscidea. You'd think photos and illustrations would be helpful, but no, in this instance, I just grew more confused.  Finally, the Honolulu Zoo provided a description that cleared things up:

Think of them like a conveyor belt moving slowly from back to front. When the foremost tooth is so worn down and is of no further use, it is pushed out, mostly in pieces and replaced at the rear by a new one. An elephant grows only six complete sets of these molars during its lifetime; the final set finishes growing in at about the age of 40. This method of replacing teeth prolongs their dentition until that age. Many elephants do reach the age of 60, but few elephants reach the age of 70 because the teeth will be worn down and decayed to the point of them not being able to eat any more resulting in death by slow starvation.
It will be fun to see if my dream elephant changes now that I know his tooth is an aberration.  Good thing there were no challenges to his ability to speak English or to his love of ham and cheese sandwiches -- provided you can find the correct bit of pig, because otherwise, he would as soon do without.

Right.  Still there?

I also hope to program myself to dream something in particular.  This is a recurring effort, one that I've never completely actualized.  On several occasions, I've been able to "direct" my dreaming but only in the most general way.

What bit of directed dreaming do I hope to achieve?  Well, as usual, Fred started it all.

We ran into each other, quite literally, around midnight, in the kitchen.  (Colonel Mustard, in the Conservatory, with the Lead Pipe)

In my attempt to reconstruct how we got from Subject A to Subject H, I believe much of it stemmed from a remark I made about Dr. Greg House, lead character on the television series House.  It's not a show I watch often.  For instance, I have no idea how House ended up in prison, friendless, trading favors, mopping floors, still dispensing acerbic medical advice but claiming to no longer practice that art.  Clearly, that situation not being the premise of the show, it is a temporary thing.  Somewhere in all of that how-the-mighty-have-fallen stuff, House says something about an enduring interest in physics, and makes a passing reference to black holes.

That bit of insight into the man demanded sharing -- in the chilly kitchen at midnight.  In my defense, Fred mentioned House first, in the context of Marmy Fluffy Butt needing a diagnostician.  She is refusing to poop in any of the available litter boxes.  She will urinate therein, but daintily steps out and away to finish her proverbial business.  Having to deal with her contributions directly, Fred could not help but notice streaks of blood in her stool.  We have taken her to the vet twice, and even had a fairly extensive workup done last week, and have been repeatedly told that she's in robust health.  If she weren't such a fierce poop and pee segregationist, and if it were not for the presence of blood, we wouldn't press the issue, but we love the crazy cat.  As we were cogitating over Things Marmy, and both of us were tired, and since we were, after all, in our own darned kitchen, Fred launched into an imitation of one of those House scenes -- you know, where The Team is gathered around their Chief and a whiteboard listing the symptoms of some patient's diagnostic enigma, shouting out "it could be lupus," and suggesting a bolus of a billion milligrams of hydrocortisone.  Fred loves the "lupus" line and -- because of an intensely personal love/hate relationships with prednisone, which I have been on, almost continually, since roughly 1997 -- he always reacts to the easy mention of corticosteroids.

The vet had mentioned possibly putting Marmy on a course of steroids.  He mentioned it ONCE and I suppose our eyes bugging out and the involuntary hissing sound that flew around the cubicle stymied a second attempt.

So I didn't just say, "Fred, House is interested in physics."

There was a well-established, straight-as-a-line context.

Once apprised of Greg House's proclivities, including the black hole part, Fred decided it was the perfect time to share fascinating tidbits about theoretical physics.  My contribution for the entire rest of the conversation was this phrase, repeated:  "What I don't get is how no one ever calls them on the fact that they're constructing whole paradigms out of what is clearly *theoretical*, just hypotheses!" (Over and over and over.  I really, truly don't get it.  I mean, I can think of scads of unproven and unprovable things that are fascinating and interesting, but that won't bring me a tenured position anywhere, harrumph!)

Fred knows to include accessible anecdotes that infinitely approach whimsy when he attempts to educate me about anything beyond the Chanson de Roland, and so it was that he regaled me with a story of Einstein developing his various theories and foundational axioms (?) by imagining himself flying through the universe on a roller-coaster.  To hear Fred tell it, and I did, it was like tripping alongside the very phenomena one wants to explain. Being able to wildly coast at the speed of light and see -- well, I have no conception of what he might have seen, maybe just distortion at a more observor-friendly rate?  Like I said, I. do. not. get. it.

Of course, this bit of fluff turned into something phenomenally important when I couldn't sleep, when the pain, the chills, and the jerks set in.  When no novel could be witty, scary, or remotely interesting enough.  When peach yogurt, even, could not avert the inward gaze.  Popcorn? Don't make me laugh!

Talk about a diversion!  Me, on Einstein's roller-coaster!

But not, for me, to figure out great mysteries.  Rather, I rolled up, I rolled down, swerved left, and swerved right, all midst events I had seen mostly in photography, homely and amateurish as much as great, or by words alone, my stepmother's tales of dancing en pointe until her toes bled (in a midlength romantic tutu of black over shimmering slate gray tulle), the imperfect waltz of the Bovary, and Pliny across the bay from the erupting Mount Vesuvius, all slowed to an observable rate, directionally mine, reversible even.  The great cosmic roller-coaster ride, with the cosmos, like the emphasis, being mine.

Of course, Fred had gone on to talk of evaporation within black holes, who have their own thermodynamic laws, apparently, and of the universe conceived as a ginormous hologram, or as projection, anyway.

The last thing I actually remember, word-for-word?

"Imagine what might happen if you were cruising along in your spaceship, precisely even with the speed of light... and you turned on your headlights!"

Fred knows how to talk to silly thinkers like me.  I knew immediately what would happen to that poor soul, doubtless in possession of his spaceship operator's license for mere moments before the fickle decision to put on the brights popped into his little tiny head.

Whiplash, that's what would happen!  Pistons and gears, oil and water, futuristic unitards in a bind!

I do love Fred.  And tonight, as I prepare to dream, I'll be hoping to make wild coaster runs, maybe with my friend the anorexic elephant, who will lisp into my ears possible explanations for the wonders we'll fly through, and who may reveal what we can do to calm Marmy's gut, and my legs.  There's gonna be some major Einstein hair come morning.

Soft Paw [with a side of Sweet Honey in the Rock]

All you need to know is that you get to see "more Buddy," and we'll be fine, you and I, youse guys and me.

Don't worry, as soon as the need for a bathroom assumes gigantonormous proportions, I will find a way to exit this wheelchair and knee-knobble to the loo.  But at the moment, my legs won't work and I am -- as the Bible might put it -- sore irritated.  Sore afraid.  Sore stuck.  Not to mention sore sore.

adv

archaic direly; sorely (now only in such phrases as sorepressed, sore afraid)
[Old English sār; related to Old Norse sārr, Old High German sēr, Gothic sair sore, Latin saevus angry]

Until then, it's cat videos and anything else that is both inane and distracting.  Oh, a new episode of Hoarders is on.  Be still my heart.  Quick, give me something to clean, a feline to brush, lint to pick, dust to scatter, a suspicion of dirt!  I bet this show has inspired a whole heck of a lot of cleaning in Amerika.

Okay, back to the subject at hand.  Mostly, that is Buddy the Freakishly Large Kitten Recently Discovered to be of the Maine Coon Variety.

I've previously explained that he is trained to the command "Soft Paw," by necessity, as his natural Paw State is far from being one of squishy-soft, pastel-colored angelic intentions.  His paws will one day be registered lethal weapons.  To the immunosuppressed among us, they are killers right *now*!

So the big-little guy loves to play Fetch with his mice, and will in fact, bug the badinage right out of you until you acquiesce to his every freaking fetching ploy and demand.  Mwa ha ha!  Help!

In order to give the Soft Paw command some currency in the World of Buddy, we train him through his love of Fetch.  In short, we do what all animal lovers/owners do but I am trying so hard not to think of how I need to peeeeeeeeeeeee but cannot get out of this magnificent red Pronto that I will expound and pound upon the least little detail just to get through one more blessed [dry] minute.

Oh dear God, I'm gonna die laughing, at least.  Fred just flew by, telling me, at a high rate of speed, that he discovered that Marmy Fluffy Butt has organized the entire Feline Remnant of Marlinspike Hall such that Dobby the Runt and Buddy the Freakishly Large Kitten are pooping in one litter box, and urinating in a second one.  Marmy herself?  She pees in a third litter box, and poops... well, at the moment, she is pooping, very neatly and discreetly, right next to the paper we put down for her by the back door.  Right... the back door leading to the Private Palatial Porch.  Making yet another delightful obstacle to my getting out that door into the fresh, pine-scented air.  Wait!  That was yesterday's rant!

Anyway, God bless Fred.  Because I am not supposed to dabble in things kitty-litter related.  Also, thank the dear Lord that Fred shares every toileting detail with me as I would otherwise be oblivious to that important part of the animals' lives.  Now I know what Dobby has been whining about -- Marmy has extended the web of her powerful influence to actually designating which waste receptacles are to be used for which waste.

shiver::of::pure::terror

Right.
Hmm.
So.

Ah, yes!  Soft Paws.  I was able to make two very short videos of Buddy's training.  As usual, what I recorded turned out to be aberrant from the norm.  Dobby has become jealous of the Big-Little Guy and so his pink nose turns up quite close to the camera every time.  He's a bit of a diva.  And Marmy even has decided that there must be something inherently rewarding about this camera business, but when she pops up (she's the one who always looks a little confused), that scares Buddy in the extreme.  Her terrorism of him, early and often, is now paying its dividends.  In one of these videos, he has turned to chase the beloved mouse, after successfully tapping my hand at the Soft Paw command, and then he FREEZES.  That would be because Marmy Fluffy Butt decided to appear, just out of camera range.  It is a testimonial to her ridiculous power that the kitten nearly ceases to breathe, holds his crouch, and -- though we cannot see them -- allows his pupils to madly dilate as he points like a Bracco Italiano after feathered game in old Lombardy.

I've come to dearly love Buddy's face.  He is so clueless, you might think.  You might even hold this wrongheaded opinion for six months or so, and who could blame you?  Because until you have the chance to watch his cagey self on video -- hitting rewind with frequency -- you are fooled by the vacant expression, the goofy grin.

He's sly, this one.

He has developed little tics as he plays Soft Paw Fetch.  He wants to NOT tap my hand.  Or if he gives in, and goes for a tap, he wants to claw me to death, just a little.  But then he won't get the mouse.  So he bobs and weaves, ducks his head, does a little rope-a-dope.  Oh Lord, I have to pee!

If you see Buddy tap my hand but not receive the Fetch reward of a Tossed Mouse, it's because he forgot the soft part of the command.  When that happens, he does sometimes have to do some Quality Control calibrations, the first of which is always to offer his head as a paw replacement.  This is terribly important to him, so I give him verbal praise, but repeat the request for a Soft Paw.  It's cool, watching him weigh how much he wants what, what he's willing to do, etcetera.

All right, that's it.  I'll be right back.  If I drive the wheelchair to the threshold of the bathroom door and then throw myself forward with all my might, I am bound to hit porcelain of some kind.  Wish me luck.  If I am not back in 10 minutes, please, would someone call Tante Louise?
