Fred tells me that Joe stopped singing for a few years because he was embarrassed by the jerky movements his body naturally made when he sang.  I fell in love with Joe Cocker because of the soul in his body and the raspy voice made raspy by the cigarettes that, I guess, killed him.  Put on Joe Cocker and everyone, every man, even the most attractive, just disappeared in the fog, and I could feel my body spasm and jerk and roll with the music.  Thank you, Joe Cocker. Oh yes, and the lyrics that are often recorded as "incomprehensible"?  Oh, they never were!
